This project is a house for an artist and 2-3 apprentices. The concept is derived from ancient cultural traditions in which students become adopted family of an artist, living, working, and creating art together. The house incorporates both symmetry and asymmetry in its organization and layout. The symmetries reflect shared programs and uses, while the asymmetries reflect how the spaces are customized to the different types of users -- the artist and the students. The spatial organization is reinforced by the design of three components: the central stair, the architectural screens, and the facade.
